Another success has come for the Government this weekend, after His Majesty signed into law their new Government of Northern Ireland Act.
Proposed by Northern Ireland Secretary, Zen0_z17, the new legislation establishes a new governance structure for Northern Ireland, including the reestablishment of the Office of Governor, to serve as His Majesty’s representative, and a new legislature, namely the Northern Ireland Assembly, to oversee legislation in the region.
An Executive Committee, constituting the Government of Northern Ireland, is also established, to handle the general business of government for the region. It is led by the First Minister, to be appointed by the Governor.
The new legislation has automatically forced the subsequent repealment of the Middletown Local Government Act, previously used as the structure of governance in the region, which established a local council in Middletown, led by a Mayor.
This is another successful promise fulfilled by the Government, who triumph this week, ticking yet another King’s Speech pledge from their list. The return to devolution in the region after months of governing oversight from Westminster is a sign of potential progress and prolonged support for Northern Ireland.
