Canada’s House of Commons plunged into political drama after Deputy Speaker Dylanhello20 resigned from his position following the defeat of his second motion of no confidence in Speaker Polykeith.
The second motion, presented by Dylanhello20, failed to secure the support required to pass the House.
The final vote was:
- 3 Aye
- 4 Nay
- 0 Abstentions
The result means Speaker Polykeith will remain in office following the second attempt to remove him.
The narrow result, just seven votes being cast highlighted the divided nature of the chamber and immediately triggered a political reaction from the Deputy Speaker.
Following the vote, Dylanhello20 announced that he would resign as Deputy Speaker.
He described the decision as a “protest” against the House’s decision to reject his motion.
Resignation proves short-lived
In an unexpected twist, Dylanhello20’s resignation from the chair did not last long.
He was subsequently re-elected as Deputy Speaker, returning to the position despite having resigned in protest over the failed motion.
The development has created an unusual sequence of events in the House: a Deputy Speaker challenged the Speaker, saw his motion defeated, resigned in protest and was then returned to the same position.
Questions over the Speaker’s future
The failed vote does not prevent further political challenges to Polykeith’s leadership of the House, although the second defeat suggests that removing the Speaker will require broader support among MPs.
For now, Polykeith remains Speaker, while Dylanhello20 has returned to the Deputy Speaker’s chair.
