“We’ll pursue peace, but never at the expense of British sovereignty”: PM addresses public following emergency sitting

Prime Minister Sir Callum Cathcart has issued a statement addressing recent media leaks surrounding the conflict between New Zealand and Antarctica, alongside the signing of the Treaty of Rothera.

The statement follows an emergency parliamentary session called by the Prime Minister to address the developing situation and outline the Government’s response to the negotiations.

Cathcart revealed that the United Kingdom had initially proposed a mutual defence treaty with the Antarctic Government in exchange for the transfer of sovereignty over the British Antarctic Territory. Following the rejection of that proposal, the Government pursued further negotiations while placing the British Armed Forces on standby in preparation for potential escalation.

The Prime Minister confirmed that an agreement was reached shortly before the scheduled emergency session, resulting in the transfer of the British Antarctic Territory in exchange for a mutual defence alliance between the two parties.

Addressing criticism surrounding the Government’s handling of the situation, Cathcart defended the short-notice session, arguing that limiting the time available for a coordinated response was necessary to prevent further nations from becoming involved in a potential conflict.

The Prime Minister concluded by reaffirming his Government’s commitment to protecting British national interests and supporting the Armed Forces, stating that the pursuit of peace would not come at the expense of national sovereignty.
