Alwaysbegold has been appointed Acting Governor of Saint Helena, Ascension & Tristan da Cunha, following the continued absence of the territory’s Governor, ZaneJAlexander.
ZaneJAlexander, who was appointed by His Majesty the King to serve as Governor at the end of last year, has been absent from his duties to the island since mid January. It is believed this is due to real life commitments, but no confirmations have been made by the Governor’s Office at this time.
Alwaysbegold is a well known figure in the UK community, having worked in several respectable institutions including Transport for London and London Ambulance Service, and has held several positions in Commonwealth nations including Gibraltar, across domestic, foreign and business related affairs.
Always’ appointment as Acting Governor was confirmed by the Executive Council on Tuesday evening, following approval by the Royal Household.
The request for appointment was made when Chief Minister PhilipCransworth wrote to the King, expressing his sincere concerns about the Governor [Zane]’s continued absence, citing that “The Governor plays an important role in the island’s structure, and his presence is necessary for government. His recent prolonged absence has created some difficulty to ensure any chance of progress and growth in our fair nation.”
Chapter 3, Section 15 of the territory’s latest Constitution grants the Executive Council the authority to appoint an Acting Governor, during a period of time in which the Governor is deemed unable to fulfil his responsibilities. The eligibility of the clause was deemed suitable to be used in this case.
In his appointment statement released by Plantation House late Tuesday evening after his arrival on the island, the Acting Governor shared his delight to “work with individuals across our public services … and wider community”, further adding his commitment to “ensuring that the high standards that this island deserves are upheld.”
Meanwhile, citizens have welcomed the Acting Governor, with a government representative sharing that “this appointment is a step in the right direction for rebuilding governance in Saint Helena and our relationship with the community. We thank alwaysbegold for taking on this important responsibility.”
