In comments given to the BBC, ScriptedSid said it had been “a great honour” to serve in the role, but added that the timing felt appropriate as the current Parliament draws to a close.
“It’s been a great honour to serve as Lord Speaker but the time is right for me to move on with the dissolution of this parliament,” he said.
“I look forward to being able to debate legislation again with my fellow Peers after so long presiding over the chamber.”
His presence will not be forgotten, with a large crater now permanently imprinted on the woolsack for years to come.
