“I’d rather have them end on my own terms”
In the statement, the outgoing leader reflected on the rapid rise of the party from what he described as “the brink of being deregistered” to a nationally recognised political force.
He credited a small team of supporters with rebuilding the organisation and expanding its presence across the country.
“I decided I’d rather have them end on my own terms than let myself be removed in the future,” the statement said, suggesting the resignation was intended to allow a smoother transition ahead of the next parliamentary cycle.
The departing leader also highlighted his unexpectedly long tenure at the top of the party.
“I didn’t even think I’d last a week,” he wrote, adding that he had become the party’s longest-serving leader.
