United Nations announces six awards for 2026 at planned New York ceremony

The United Nations Secretariat has announced plans to host a new awards ceremony and gala at its headquarters in New York, recognising achievements across the international community during 2026.

The event, organised by the Secretariat in the absence of the Nobel Foundation, will feature six award categories celebrating contributions from nations, individuals, organisations and developers.

Members of the United Nations will be invited to submit nominations before the Secretariat selects the winners.

Six categories announced

The Secretariat confirmed that awards would be presented in the following categories:

  • UN Peace Prize
  • Nation of the Year
  • Person of the Year
  • International Forum Post of the Year
  • Best Media Company of the Year
  • Developer of the Year

The UN Peace Prize will be open to organisations, individual players and other eligible actors, excluding the United Nations itself and the Secretariat.

How will nominations work?

According to the announcement, nominations will be collected through Google Forms, allowing members of the international community to put forward candidates and explain why they deserve recognition.

The Secretariat will then deliberate on the submissions and select the winners, who will be announced at the ceremony.

No date has yet been confirmed for the event, and further details about the nomination process are expected to follow.

Recognition across the international community

The awards are intended to acknowledge contributions made throughout 2026, from diplomatic initiatives and national leadership to media reporting and technological development.

The inclusion of a Best Media Company category will also recognise the role of journalism and broadcasting within the international community.

The Secretariat said it hoped members would attend the ceremony when the arrangements had been finalised.
