Royal Family shrinks following exit of former King Edward

The former monarch has announced his departure from the Royal Household in its entirety, with plans to “devote greater attention” to his business interests.

As monarch, he reigned for 162 days from June 2024 to November 2024

In a document released by the Household, it has been announced that the Prince will change titles from that of Duke of Gloucester to a newly created hereditary peerage, as the Duke of Westmorland.

The Duke will also be disassociating from his previous name of Edward Wellesley, returning to his original name of Geoff Maltby.

He shall now be styled as Sir Geoff Maltby, the Duke of Westmorland, KG KT KP GCB OM LVO

The Duke, in his capacity as Arriva London Deputy Chairman, stood with the Prime Minister.

Statement from the Duke of Westmorland

“I am grateful to His Majesty for releasing me from the shackles of the House of Wellesley and permitting me to relinquish my royal style. I shall continue in public life as Sir Geoff Maltby, whilst assuming the new title of Duke of Westmorland.”

“I will remain Director of Communications at Number 10 Westbridge, where I am committed to supporting the Prime Minister and Cabinet in implementing their agenda to promote activity and engagement across Westbridge. I will also continue to serve as Governor of Gibraltar.”

“I intend to devote greater attention to my business interests, including my positions on the boards of Roadside Cargo Solutions and Arriva London.”

“I look forward to continuing my work, free from the constraints of royal life.”
