The Governor of Northern Ireland, the Lord Sid of Christchurch, has formally dissolved the Assembly of Northern Ireland and called for an election.
Under the Government of Northern Ireland Act 2026, an election must be held sixty days from when the assembly first met.
This time period has now surpassed, and a subsequent election has been called.
The current First Minister of Northern Ireland, leahvnx, has also called a leadership election within her party, the Unity Party, following its “disappointing” results in the Westminster General Election.
A full timetable will be released by the Electoral Commission in due course.
