Judge Warns Electoral Commission May Be Held in Contempt

The Right Honourable BeanJ has warned that the Electoral Commission “may be held in contempt if they continue plans to violate court order”.

The Right Honourable BeanJ has warned that the Electoral Commission “may be held in contempt if they continue plans to violate court order”.

The comments come after the Commission said it would continue enforcing a 7.5% vote deduction against the National Party despite a High Court injunction blocking the sanction.

Earlier on Friday, BeanJ ruled that the proposed deduction could “materially alter electoral outcomes” and granted interim relief pending further proceedings.

The Electoral Commission has since said it considers the ruling illegitimate and intends to seek an emergency stay from the Court of Appeal.
